Modern Times Beer is craft beer brewery tucked away into the industrial area of San Diego, CA, that surrounds the Valley View Casino Center (San Diego Sports Arena). It can be a little difficult to find if you do not know where you’re going, but don’t give up to search, because once you find it, you will be one step closer to consuming an incredibly tasty beverage. The 2,000 square foot ‘Lomaland Fermentorium’ is spacious and filled with unique art, old book shelves, walls lined with comic books, and features an enormous mural of Michael Jackson and a monkey made from post it notes. Kinda strange, but somehow very fitting.
It’s a bit of a blast to the past when things were simple, the world moved at a bit of a slower pace, and people actually sat back and drank beer without staring like zombies at the flashing of the television. Their core four beers include: Blazing World, a hoppy dark amber, Fortunate Islands, a hoppy, citrusy wheat, Black House, a roasty stout, and Lomaland, a Saison.
A Blazing World at Modern Times Beer
This area around the Sports Arena is starting to pickup, and what was once an area that didn’t have many options when attending a concert, or sporting event, is picking up steam and turning into a great area to consume a beverage beforehand, or stop in to get a growler fill. This main location is just a few short blocks from Bay City Brewing, so bouncing from one to the other is easy, and makes for a great afternoon of consuming. For a more intimate version of Modern Times, head on over the North Park to visit their taproom. The interior is decorated somewhat like the main brewery, and pours the same beers, but is a much smaller version of the original. It’s in a great spot right off of 30th Street and Upas. Get yourself a flight of beers, and soak up the hip North Park nightlife, and then make your way over to Thorn St. Brewery to give their neighborhood brewery a shot. You will not be disappointed with either one.
