Benchmark Brewing, like lots of San Diego breweries is tucked away into a bit of an industrial area, and if you didn’t know any better, you would think that you were walking into an office space. Luckily for us, this space has been filled with some brewing equipment, a stack of beer cans, and a bar front area serving up their collection of beers.
Setting the Benchmark
The space inside is quite pleasant, with a wood-paneled wall, picnic tables, and various small tables to belly up to and sip on your beverage. The walls are lined with some really cool topography maps, and staring at you near the back is the lit up sign saying Benchmark Brewing: Setting the Standard. It’s not a large establishment, but it’s a really warm feeling, with some faux rocks inside to make you get the feeling of being out on someone’s back patio. Their beer selection consists of roughly ten taps, and features some IPA’s, stouts, Belgian’s, and other good, solid sales. Perhaps the highlight of their selection is their modestly abv, Oatmeal Stout. This sucker is dark, and when poured into one of their dimpled beer mug, it screams at you, “drink me now.” The low abv percentage makes this a very drinkable beer, but the nose and the taste on your tongue presents a much bigger, bolder flavor profile than you would expect.
Matt Akin is the brewmaster and founder of Benchmark Brewing. His experience at Alesmith as one of the brewmaster’s gives him instant credibility, and the beers he is currently putting out at his own establishment make this a must visit type of place. The atmosphere is nice, the beer is great, and it’s small enough to find some good company to sit and chat with.
